CNC Milling Machine Operator, Advanced -   This position is located in Georgetown, ON. The CNC Milling Machine Operator - Advanced is responsible for set up and operation of CNC milling machine(s) to mill surfaces of metallic work pieces according to specifications and job instruction sheets, applying knowledge of machining methods. The incumbent of this role must maintain customer, company and ISO standards as well as comply with company Health and Safety Policies and Procedures. The incumbent has demonstrated experience machining components to tight tolerances and is familiar with working independently on CNC programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (but not limited to):

  • Read process sheets, blueprints and/or sketches of part to determine machining to be completed, dimensional specifications, set up and operating requirements;

  • Review specifications to determine set up procedure, machining sequence and dimensions of finished product;

  • Responsible for planning, writing and editing programs;

  • Responsible for the selection and/or preparation of tooling for these operations when needed;

  • Ensure effective production of quality parts by checking drawings or sketches, using gauges and other measuring equipment;

  • Program, load control media such as disk or direct numerical control, in machine control console or enters commands to retrieve pre-programmed machine instructions from the database;

  • Observe numerical displays on control panel and compare with data on process sheet for accuracy;

  • Write and/or edit programs to optimize and/or correct machine performance; adjust feed and speed and change cutters to ensure that parts are machined according to specifications;

  • Assemble and preset tooling for next operation during automated cycle to reduce machine downtime;

  • May require set up and operation of a second machine during controlled machining cycles;

  • Conduct minor preventative maintenance procedures as scheduled;

  • Complete minor troubleshooting as required;
  • Observes and listens to machine operation in order to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools when possible;

  • Notify Team Leader when run times are incorrect or product will not meet timelines;

  • Ensure machining tasks are completed in accordance with specified run times;

  • Report discrepancies to the appropriate department;

  • Provide guidance to apprentices when required;
  • Make recommendations for productivity and/or method improvements;

  • Ensure ISO guidelines are followed; follow Job Instruction Sheets and Tag Procedures etc;

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision

  • Ability to troubleshooting programs, equipment, tools and processes

  • Ability to perform calculations and set ups for CNC Milling Machine(s), while maintaining tight tolerances and working with small dimensions

  • Ability to communicate to Team Leader or Lead Hand when machining times are not realistic and when deadlines will not be met

  • Strong understanding of programs, tools and paths in order to run and edit programs if required

  • Experience machining components to tight tolerances (5 microns) and can work independently.


High School Diploma with a minimum of three to four (3-4) years related experience, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The employee is frequently required use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision requirements are good general vision, ability to distinguish between colours, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Requires close attention to detail to ensure accurateness of conception


A variety of Physical and Sensory demands are required throughout the shift, which may include setting of tools, close attention to details with programs, specifications, blueprints and measuring of parts.

While performing the duties of this position, the individual will be in contact with live tools. There may be contact with coolants/oils; noise level is moderate; safety boots and eye protection are required; the working area is climate controlled; working with small dimensions means concentration on details with tight tolerances
