Position Summary:

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer, New Product Development (NPD) has outstanding problem-solving capability and accountability skills. They are a hands-on leader. They can lead and facilitate cross functional teams in deploying new products and processes in manufacturing that achieve safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets. They work on unusually complex problems, provide solutions that are highly creative and able to drive for results.

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer for NPD deals with design-for-producibility, product transition from the design phase to full Production Release, including quality, manufacturing, and product sustaining processes. This position focuses on building the processes and infrastructure needed for each department involved in assembly, test, and quality control.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Work with all departments in the Quality/Manufacturing/Engineering groups to establish products and processes that meet functional requirements.
  • Develop products and processes for repetitive, cost effective, high quality production.
  • Work with Manufacturing and Engineering to define and document requirements early in the product development life cycle and continues to drive conformance through preliminary and critical design reviews, validation, and scale for production.
  • Lead or be an active member of all NPD collaborative efforts with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing to:
    • Define manufacturing processes, production targets, costs, contracting with outside vendors and competitive factors.
    • Partner with Supply Chain and Engineering to review manufacturing RFPs and responses.
    • Creates manufacturing plans for pilot production and full production.
    • Demonstrates and owns production readiness and documentation. This includes production tooling, facilities, and manufacturing methods/workflows. 
    • Sustain the manufacturing process by minimizing scrap and rework.   
    • Attends project reviews and design reviews. Presents updates at project reviews on manufacturing readiness and issues.
    • Able to analyze engineering models and designs for producibility
  • Participates in the validation process. Including the development of product validation test plans, managing validation, and aiding in the presentation of validation results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Defines requirements and oversees design of production test fixtures utilizing in-house team members or outside contractors.
  • Leads Root Cause (RCA) and corrective action events.
  • Provides technical support to the manufacturing engineering floor, manufacturing vendors, sales, and customers.
  • Partners with engineering to ensure hardware, software, mechanical fixes to root cause are developed and implemented.
  • Identifies production yield and test issues and develops improvements.
  • Leads the AFE process for all capital investments to improve manufacturing safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Facilitates, as needed, large scale continuous improvement projects impacting multiple value streams.
  • Supports as an alternate resource for Value Stream Mfg Engineers to resolve quality assurance issues on the shop floor due to capacity or capability limitations.

Skills/Experience:

  • Five to ten years’ experience in manufacturing processes in a heavy manufacturing industry.
  • Experience in the design and use of jigs and fixtures.
  • Project management experience is required.
  • A working knowledge of designing for production, JIT, lean and continuous improvement techniques.
  • Computer skills in word processing, spread sheet, Microsoft Project, and CAD software.
  • Good communications skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of personnel and disciplines.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering/Technology, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
