Position Summary

Hillenbrand is looking for a Senior Internal Auditor to join our team. As the Senior Internal Auditor III, you will work closely with the controller’s group, business unit management, finance leadership, external audit firm and, as needed, co-sourcing firms. The Senior Internal Auditor III must be able to execute the assigned audit areas to timely and successful completion.  Along with the traditional skills of auditing, the methodology of continuous improvement will be applied to audits within the annual plan. Emphasis is on best practices to efficiently achieve high quality audits and reviews, with identified solutions, and timely reporting to relevant stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinate with business line management regarding upcoming audits;
  • Participate in and perform various aspects of the audit, to include planning, kick-off, testing, wrap-up, and issue and corrective action development;
  • Examine and analyze management operations, internal control systems, and accounting records;
  • Partner with and build strong working relationships with business line management;
  • Provide regular updates to Manager of Internal Audit on progress of audits;
  • Participate in the risk assessment process;
  • Mentoring/training of junior auditors and/or business line guest auditors;
  • Participate in development of internal audit policy and procedure documentation;
  • Demonstrate a confident and well-developed communication style, that establishes credibility and facilitates a clear understanding of audit issues and influence change where appropriate;
  • Participate in administrative matters and special projects as assigned by the Director or Manager of Internal Audit;
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have any direct supervisory responsibilities.


  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with an accounting or business administration degree or equivalent work experience 
  • 5+ years’ experience performance auditing to professional audit standards and business process improvements.
  • The following certifications (or progress toward the following certifications) are preferred: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).


Required/preferred skills:

  • Ability to establish and maintain the trust of staff and senior leadership required
  • Strong computer skills, including financial systems and databases; data analytics experience a plus
  • Experience in JD Edwards/SAP/Navision preferred
  • Experience in HFM/BPC/OneStream preferred
  • German or Chinese Mandarin language skills preferred

Required/preferred experience:

  • Public accounting experience preferred
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in conduct of performance audits of organization’s functions such as accounting, procurement, human resources, administrative and other business operations functions.
  • Understanding of information technology general controls.
  • Applied knowledge of accounting concepts, audit methodologies, risk-based auditing techniques, COSO Internal Control — Integrated Framework (2013), Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, etc.
  • Manufacturing industry experience preferred



Upon removal of COVID restrictions, travel will be required up to approximately 25%. Travel is an important part of the job and may occur during non-work hours and weekends.
