Inventory Planner

DME is looking for an Inventory Planner to join our team in Windsor, Ontario Canada. As an Inventory Planner you will be responsible for planning, organizing and controlling the warehousing and flow of raw material. The incumbent will be responsible for identifying Continuous Improvement initiatives in order to optimize the warehousing and transportation of steel product across all steel locations in Canada.  This includes improving upon the current logistics process, reducing quality issues (scrap/rework), reducing transportation cost, minimizing work-in-process and maximizing setup times. The incumbent will also conduct feasibility studies and Kaizen events to improve current processes, methods, equipment and technology.

What you’ll do:


  • Ensure that all safety related issues and risks are addressed in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety program policy and procedures, including Emergency Response
  • Ensure that contracted vendors are following the Company’s safety policy and procedures
  • Develop and maintain all process and departmental operation manuals for departmental processes/procedures in conjunction with the Value Streams


  • Review current warehouse locations size and capabilities
  • Review inventory requirements and prepare site plan for incoming and existing inventory for best use of floor space
  • Manage the control of inventory by conducting cycle counts and determining reorder points and placing work orders as required
  • Assist steel conversion center with optimization of nesting software to minimize material handling and maximizing setup
  • Review On-Time-Delivery reports and identify bottlenecks that are affecting on time delivery.  Ensure that plans are in place to resolve the constraints
  • Conduct order receipts of incoming product and prepare documentation for deliveries, shipping and export.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to reduce WIP and to increase throughput and meet on-time-delivery requirements
  • Develop plan to control barrel stock and implement barcoding for ease of access and usage.


  • Assist as assigned with Root Cause Analysis (A3s, 8Ds, 5 Whys reports) and Corrective Actions to address internal quality issues (scrap and rework), Warranty issues, and Goodwill issues
  • Assist the Quality Department with establishing procedures/processes on new machines and/or processes related to quality
  • Maintain Value Stream Map, Lean roadmap, and lean road map action plan


  • Ensure that Inventory List is updated with the latest information.
  • Review feasibility studies of manufacturing processes to improve production efficiency and reduce labor costs, material and overhead costs
  • Ensure that all company owned equipment is inspected and maintained;
  • Review, monitor and report on OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) to identify areas of opportunity to task improvements
  • Update and maintain warehouse layout - CAD
  • Assist in the day to day operations required
  • Modify, update and maintain Value Stream Capacity Models to ensure that labor utilization is optimized.

Continuous Improvement

  • Schedule and conduct Kaizen events to identify opportunities to reduce/eliminate non-value added waste in the process;
  • Develop, update and maintain Value Stream Map (current and future state)
  • Develop, update and maintain Lean Road Map
  • Execute Lean Road Map Action Plan

Providing services and support to internal and external customers, suppliers

The incumbent in this role will have daily contact with Manufacturing Support employees at all levels to provide ongoing support to develop requirements.  Working directing with Production Supervisors and Managers they will identify continuous improvement opportunities to improve labor efficiencies and modify/update the processes when required.

Key resources: other people and/or capital and equipment

The incumbent interacts with a wide variety of manufacturing personnel to improve existing processes through troubleshooting, new equipment design and method implementations. The Inventory planner will provide daily support to Production Supervisors and Managers for the procurement of inventory and optimizing work flow,

Decision Making

The incumbent of this role has completed the required training and acquired hands-on experience that will allow them to interact with production personnel to resolve problems and independently follow up, as well as manage their workload daily with little supervision. 

The Inventory Planner is responsible for prioritizing, meeting ISO standards and acting as a technical resource for other departments to resolve production and quality issues.

Basic Requirements:

The incumbent of this role will hold a Mechanical or Industrial Engineering degree.   Process improvement knowledge and experience (such as Lean Manufacturing or 6 Sigma); planning experience in a global environment; must be proficient with MS Office; ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines; strong implementation and project management skills; ability to multi-task; strong organization skills; good written and oral communication skills; strong inter-personal skills; good attention to detail; ability to be proactive; creative individual with an expected ability to make recommendations for change and continuous improvement initiatives.

The incumbent is familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures.  Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.  A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected along with a specialized technical knowledge that comes from internal experience

Physical and Sensory demands are representative of an employee working in a fast-paced office environment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  The employee is frequently required use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  Specific vision requirements are good general vision, ability to distinguish between colours, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

The incumbent in this role will work in the office environment and production plant.  The noise level is moderate; safety boots and eye protection are required; the working area is climate controlled.  Work may require occasional travel, depending on activity.
